Reasons not to use GoDaddy Office 365

Had a client purchase GoDaddy’s Office 365 product recently. Then we decided to change the email domain. Now, for anyone who has ever dealt with email service, changing the domain is quite easy, you simple add the new domain and voila, you have a new email for all your existing account. I searched and searched, but could not find the domain option as directed by Microsoft here. It’s a simple, click the domains menu and add a domain. GoDaddy just plain does NOT offer such service.

Below is the chat log:

  • Anthony –
Thank you for contacting Chat support. My name is Anthony, Who am I speaking with today and how can I assist you today?
  • Michael Cole –
Michael and I am trying to figure out how to change the domain for 365 email accounts
  • Anthony –
    Hello Michael
  • Anthony –
sure I can help you with that, let me review and then get you the steps in order to make the change
  • Anthony –
I’m getting the steps for that now please allow 2 minutes please
  • Anthony –
you would need to delete the account using these steps then set it back up:
  • To Change Office 365 Email account

    1. Log in to your Account Manager.
    2. Click Office 365 Email and Productivity.
    3. Next to the email you want to use, click Manage.
    4. Click Delete account

it takes about 5-10 minutes to delete then there is an icon that says create account which you can choose to use the new domain name

  • Michael Cole –
and what about all the email
  • Anthony –
once you delete the old messages will be deleted
  • Michael Cole –
Great, so how can I change the domain and keep the email like most other email services can do.
  • Anthony –
if you wanted to save then you will need to backup the emails in outlook using a .pst file.
  • Anthony –
  • Michael Cole –
Since we are paying you all for this service, We would appreciate you all doing the migration please.
  • Michael Cole –
Does this do anything with billing? Will deleting the email refund the payment?
  • Anthony –
    no
  • Anthony –
it’s a different process you wont need to buy anything else or refund
  • Michael Cole –
Great, when can you make this change for us
  • Anthony –
We currently do not have a service to backup your emails for you in outlook and the steps provided above are the only ones that are offered in order to help you backup and save the data before making the change
  • Michael Cole –
We will want all the emails and calendar and contacts backed up for all accounts and the accounts changed to @****.com, thank you
  • Michael Cole –
Doesn’t sound like my problem since you all have the email services
  • Michael Cole –
feel free to bump me to a higher tech support at any time
  • Anthony –
there is no need to speak to anyone else today Michalel. There is not a service in GoDaddy where we backup all of your stuff for you so you can move over to a different domain name. so regardless of the support representative you speak to you would get the same answer that I have provided.
  • Anthony –
if you have any other issues in the account I would be happy to assist you with that today
  • Michael Cole –
Great so you can change the domain without me having to spend time backing up pst files as this is a server level function I as a paying user cannot do.
  • Michael Cole –
Also, how do I restore the pst once the accounts are moved?
  • Anthony –
again that is not something that we will do for you but I have provided the steps to empower you to be able to change the domain name on the email. once you backup everything to the .pst file, you change the name on the email then add that to outlook. the old information will be in the .pst so you are able to import that information to the new email
  • Michael Cole –
What are the steps for importing?
  • Anthony –
  • Michael Cole –
For the record, this is the information I was looking for, however it is not an option with your services. https://support.office.com/en-GB/article/Change-your-default-domain-for-email-in-Office-365-1bd69e1c-9598-49ce-b341-9ac895dbe681
  • Anthony –
The information provided would be directly from Microsoft on how to export an import the data to a .pst file. As woutlook is a 3rd party product we would not have any additional information to provide, but we would recommend reachout out to Microsoft if you did need more information on how to backup the emails as its not a service that we have within GoDaddy

What have I learned. Well, companies are becoming more and more difficult to do what has always been a simple task. We either fix it by ditching the services or we smile, bend over, and ask for another.
